The first thing I need to point out is that you need to narrow your list to centers, like ours, that specialize in tubal reversal. We used to tell patients with travel concerns to try to find someone near them to do their surgery. We don’t do that anymore because we have come to realize that experience means an awful lot with this type of surgery. There are several centers in the southeastern United States that do tubal reversal surgery like ours on an outpatient basis for less than 7000 dollars and that is your best bet, in my opinion. We have done 2 to 3 thousand of these surgeries and we have come to realize that most are easy to do. Some cases are hard and that’s when experience is valuable.
Tubal reversal surgery is simple in a sense because it is a small incision and we pull the tubes up to the edge rather than go deep into the body to work on them. The microsurgical part requires intense concentration and substantial motor skills. If you do 2 or 3 tubal reversals a month you are unlikely to have the experience to do it through a small incision and be able to do complete some difficult cases. We send 97% of our patients home with 2 good tubes, about 2% of our patients leave with just one good tube and only 1% of our patients cannot be fixed at all.
If you agree with me that you are better off at a facility, like ours, that specializes in tubal reversals the next decision that you have to make is which one. We get questions all the time about technique and I can say I have no argument with any facilities technique. We do things that other facilities may or may not do. No one knows , for sure , if their technique improves their patients results and no one should make claims that they are better than someone else. Such claims are illegal in most states and they are always unethical. The only thing I can say is that we fell that sewing the tube in layers, dye testing the repaired tube and other things we do is best for our patients.
The fallopian tube has 3 layers. The outer layer is a covering, the middle layer is muscle and the inner layer is mucosal like the lining of your nose. We feel it is important to sew the tube open as well as sew them together. The muscular layer has a function in moving the fertilized egg into the uterus. We sew that layer separately from the other two rather than bunch it together with the other two layers. We noticed that when we began doing tubes this way the dye tests were better.
We know that a lot of patients choose us for tubal reversal is because we dye test the tubes. There are two reasons we do this. Every once and a while the dye pushes a glop of mucous out the end of the tube that was blocking the tube closed. This does not happen a lot but those patients who do have this were unlikely to get pregnant with this stuff in their tubes. The second reason we dye test the tubes is that sometimes the test shows that the tubes are not correctly reversed and we need to take them apart and redo them.
We do not have any add on charges. You will not have to get $500.00 worth of lab tests before coming. You will not have to make hotel arrangements; we do that for you and pay that for you. We do not charge extra if you are overweight or have had previous surgeries. We are about an hour’s drive from the Atlanta airport and since that is a hub for many airlines, fares are often cheaper and there are more direct flights. Anesthesia fees, lab work, O.R. use everything is include, even breakfast. As far as I know there are only 4 facilities that will do a tubal reversal for less than $7000.00. I also know that some claim to do it for less but then charge extra for the things that we include. Why any facility would use this sort of trickery is beyond my ability to understand. We are usually busy and I assume others that do tubal reversals are also busy. You do not need to use sales gimmicks to attract patients, at least we don’t.
The morning after your surgery we have to check you before you go home, we will go over the results of your surgery and give you a signed copy of your operative note. This is an official document that is not required by law but lets you know exactly what happened
